Guide to the types of protocols used in Internet networks

In the following article, we will explain to you in detail what the types of protocols are, as protocols are a set of controls that help determine the method of communication between more than one device, and they include many mechanisms that help to facilitate the process of devices communicating with each other, in addition to the existence of many rules that contribute to the method of determining the mechanism of information and data packets in messages received and messages sent, and in the following paragraphs of News Eye We will explain to you in detail what are the most prominent types of protocols, so follow us.

What are the types of protocols

The number of protocols is very numerous and it is difficult to list them all, but we will explain to you in the following paragraphs what are the most popular of these types, in addition to clarifying the most used and the most important types of protocols.

Internet protocols IP

  • The internet protocol address is the basic protocol for communication and its abbreviation is (IP address).
  • It is used to connect computers together in a single network, and one of the Internet Protocol’s responsibilities is to address computers and give each device a code, number, or address that distinguishes it from another.

Transport control protocol TCP

  • It is one of the types of communication protocols used in transferring data over the network, and it can be said that transfer management protocol is a set of procedures that control the process of transferring data from one party to another.
  • Because it helps to secure the process of data transfer between the sending device and the other receiving device over the internet in a professional and accurate manner.
  • It works with Internet protocols and they are called together (TCP / IP). The responsibility of the Internet protocols is to secure computers with each other, and the responsibility of the Transport Control Protocol is to organize the process of data transfer between computers.

UDP User data protocol

  • It’s one of the types of protocols that programs use to send messages over the Internet, and those messages are short and called datagrams.
  • But what distinguishes this type of protocol is that it does not need the initial communication process that takes place between more than one party and can be said to be very similar to the (TCP) protocol.
  • The difference between the two is the mechanism for connecting devices together and the speed of data exchange and delivery.
  • Also, it does not wait for a notification to confirm the success of the operation and the correct arrival of the data because it realizes the required costs without worrying about the success of the operation or not.

HTTP Hypertext transfer protocol

  • It is the protocol responsible for the process of data transfer over the Internet, and it is also responsible for shaping the rules that help to facilitate the process of transferring files, such as images, text, sound and many other files on the Web.
  • And it allows the transfer of many files from the server to the browser, such as web pages built on the basis of the language (HTML) and other languages related to it, such as (CSS).

HTTPs Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol

  • Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the secure version of the (HTTP) protocol, so we see that the plus letter in the abbreviation stands for the word (Secure), and that word means (secure) in the English language.
  • This protocol creates a secure way to ensure communication between the web server and the user’s browser.
  • This type of protocol can be identified by the address bar on the browser page from above, as it may appear in the shape of a lock, or in green.

Domain Name System DNS protocol

  • The responsibility of the DNS protocol is to translate the name of each domain. When searching for the name of a specific site, it converts this name to its own DNS address.
  • We can describe it as the phone book of the internet, because it translates the names of websites and web pages into DNS addresses.

FTP file transfer protocol

  • FTP is responsible for transferring files from one device to another, provided those devices are connected through a (TCP/IP) package.
  • Most commonly, it is used to transfer files and make it possible to modify or change their names, among many similar tasks. The use of this type of protocol has decreased significantly in recent times, as it is considered insecure.

mail protocols

  • The Mail Protocol (SMTP) is one of the types of protocols belonging to the binary (TCP/IP), and it is responsible for receiving and sending email messages, but is characterized by the limited ability to schedule messages in the email from the receiving device.
  • Usually, the user resorts to the POP or IMAP protocol so that he can store messages in the server’s mailbox and download those messages periodically.
  • Typically, the (SMTP) protocol is used for sending email messages, while the three versions of the (POP) protocol are used for receiving email messages.

DHCP automatic host configuration protocol

  • It is a type of protocol used to dynamically assign addresses to other devices so that they can communicate with each other using the IP protocol.
  • That is, it manages the devices in a central way, instead of manually assigning network addresses (IP addresses) that are sufficient for all devices.
  • It is worth noting that this type of protocol can be applied to large corporate networks, as well as all types of small local area networks.

Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP).

  • In the event of a network problem that may cause an error in the delivery of IP packets, Internet Control Message Protocol generates error messages and sends them to the sender’s IP address.
  • It can be said that the primary responsibility and mission of this protocol is to notify the sender of an error and not be able to reach the receiver until the transmitted data is delivered.

With this, dear reader, we have explained to you in detail what are the most prominent types of protocols through our article, clarifying the main protocols, in addition to presenting their functions and importance.
